The intensity and awkwardness of the pre-fight buildup to UFC 264 left many questioning whether Conor McGregor and Dustin Poirier would be able to match the fireworks of their January rematch when they headlined the card at UFC 257.
They did even better.
McGregor and Poirier combined for five minutes of fury to open their pay-per-view trilogy fight on Saturday, and in the end, it was Poirier who landed the more damaging shots, including a series of left hands that dropped McGregor in the first round and eventually led to the doctor stopping the fight late in the first.
With the win, Poirier improved to 2-1 against McGregor and avenged his second-round knockout loss to the Irishman in 2014. It also puts Poirier in line for a lightweight title shot against Charles Oliveira, who won the belt with a second-round TKO of Michael Chandler in the main event of UFC 262.
